Last week I was walking in a mall on my way to see my wife for lunch. As I arrived a bit earlier, I decided that I would quickly stop at a coffee stand that she is always talking about and get her one of those Cappuccinos that she so loves so much. It takes a really decent cup of coffee to impress her and this little shop got the recipe just right.
Standing in front of we were an elderly couple that looked to be close to the 80-year-old mark. Standing hand in hand the elderly gentleman took the two cups, thanked the barista, kissed his wife on the cheek and handed her one cup. They took a seat at one of the two small tables available and started to have a chat. I stood and secretly eyed them for the next four minutes. And from my point of view, they looked like newlyweds.
After a moment of standing there, my curiosity got the better of me and I walked up to them and asked them how long they have been married? The gentleman cleared his throat and answered, “I and this beautiful woman have been married for 58 years.” I was almost blown away and before thinking I asked them what is the secret to being so in love after so many years? He again answered “Every morning I remind myself that I am the luckiest man in the world to be married to a woman as amazing as this. Then I can’t help myself from falling in love with her again, every day.”
This absolutely blew me away and I could not help but think that that is the kind of marriage I want to have in 50 years from now. The fact that they can do it has challenged me to treat my wife in such a way that I cannot help myself but fall in love with her a little more every day.
