Changing Negative Thinking in Relationships

In one of our previous articles, we’ve listed some of the biggest relationship killers. Negative thinking is definitely one of them. This is a bad habit that can ruin even the best of relationships.

If you meet a great partner who you get along with perfectly, you can sink even that promising relationship with negative thinking.

Therefore, to have strong, amazing relationships, first, it’s important to get rid of our negative thinking habits and find new, productive patterns that allow relationships to blossom.

  1. Leave Your Past Relationships Behind You

Sure, your wounds from the past can make it hard to approach a new relationship positively. But, just like Ernest Hemingway said:

“Forget your personal tragedy. We are all bitched from the start and you especially have to be hurt like hell before you can write seriously. But when you get the damned hurt, use it-don’t cheat with it.”

In other words, your personal tragedy is an experience of growth and learning, and not something that will follow you like a ghost your whole life.

Take whichever lessons you can from your previous failed relationship and move on: comparing your new relationship to a failed one and expecting the same negative outcome won’t get you anywhere.

  1. Practice Mindfulness

Being mindful means staying in the present moment and enjoying it. It implies not thinking about the past or worrying about the future.

You may find yourself in a perfectly enjoyable moment in your relationship. However, if you’re not emotionally present at that moment, you may sabotage yourself by thinking about all the things that can go wrong.

Try handling relationship issues as they come, and not expecting them. Worrying about the future will only ruin your present experience and you won’t be able to see all the positive sides.

  1. Communicate with Your Partner Openly and Honestly

The worst thing you can do when going through negative thinking is to be silent about it. When you communicate your worries or thoughts to your partner, they become much more easily manageable.

Your partner can help you alleviate any concerns you might have. They can also help you keep you present at the moment and enjoy the times you’re spending together. Use your partner as a personal therapist, there’s no one in the world who knows them better!

If you’re willing to dig deep and work on yourself, you can come a long way in your personal relationships. Negative thinking is a deep-rooted pattern, and individuals usually have a unique thought process for years.

So, when you’re ready to change, the mere decision might not be enough. You should really think deeply about what is the reason you’re thinking in this way. If you find a source in your past, it will be easier to understand it and address it.
